INSPECTORATE DIVISION

The Inspectorate Division is the policing arm of the  Department. In order to perform its functions the GA-FDD Inspectorate Division is sub-divided into Food & Drug Inspectorate. Both are responsible for  inspecting and licensing manufacturers and importers, registering pharmaceutical products and investigating consumer complaints. Inspectors utilize modern inspection methodology, assurance systems and standard sampling operations such as Good Manufacturing Practices and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point.

The technical scope of this division is competence for the inspection of  premises where food, drugs, cosmetics and medical devices are manufactured, prepared, packaged and stored for sale. Such premises include processing plants packaging facilities, wholesale bonds, retail outlets and Ports of Entry.

The precise scope of each inspection or related activity is determined by the nature of the work involved and is determined in writing prior to initiation of the inspection based on review of relevant documentation. The clients have access to all the Inspectorate’s requirements, guidelines and standards, thus ensuring there is a clear and demonstrable understanding between the Inspectorate and the clients with regard to the scope of the inspectorate activity to be undertaken.

ACTIVITIES OF THE FOOD & DRUG INSPECTORS

  1. Inspection of premises where food, drugs, cosmetics and medical devices are manufactured, prepared, packaged and stored for sale. Such premises include processing plants packaging facilities, wholesale bonds, retail outlets and Ports of Entry.
  2. Sampling and submission of regulated products for analysis from processing plants, bonds, port of entry, and distribution.
  3. Examination of products for;
  • Compliance to labelling requirements, e.g. Complete list of all ingredients(including additives used); false and misleading statements; compatibility and/or integrity of packaging material;
  • Import license and custom entries as part of import/export control programme.
  • Receiving and investigating consumers’ complaints.
  • Educating managers and employees of processing plants on good manufacturing and good hygiene practices by organizing and producing educational materials for clients and stakeholders.
  • Issuing import authorizations / certificates for narcotic and psychotropic substances.
